A life narrates itself

The film revisits the curious and dynamic life of 89-year old Annemarie Mahler and portrays her interaction with the physical world through art.

What do the artistic process and life have in common? Does time only move in one direction? What happens when recollections of a past time resurface and flood the memory? The artist looks back on her experiences, including on the child that she once was and with this retrospective awakens the latent artist in every viewer.  Art and life have been intertwined in her biography - and so it is in the film. With a new art of storytelling, we created lifescapes that evoke the wonderland of a Viennese girl that had to leave her hometown.  The original score animates the lands of memory and the intimate conversation of an old woman with herself and her dog Leah.

Annemarie Mahler-Ettinger was born in Vienna in 1926, but in 1939 had to leave the city of her birth and flee to the United States. She grew up in Manhattan, went to college at Berkely in California, and later wrote her doctoral dissertation in comparative literature. She became an American artist and scholar. Since 1955 she has lived in Bloomington, Indiana, and drives each summer with her dog to Cape Cod and sometimes also to the giant rocks of Utah. Ein Leben erzählt sich selbst

Was haben das Leben und die Entstehung eines Kunstwerks gemeinsam? Warum bleibt das Bild, das gemalt wird, nicht stumm und warum bewegt sich die Zeit nur in eine Richtung? Was geschieht, wenn die Erinnerungen an die verlorene Zeit wieder auftauen und das Gedächtnis fluten? Die heute 89jährige Malerin stellt sich ihren eigenen Fragen. Sie begegnet dem gelebten Leben und damit auch dem Mädchen, das sie einmal war. Das Medium der Begegnung sind die Bilder und der künstlerische Prozess, wie sie ihn wahrnimmt.

Annemarie Mahler-Ettinger wurde 1926 in Wien geboren, musste Anfang 1939 mit zwölf Jahren ihre Heimatstadt verlassen und allein in die USA flüchten. Sie wuchs in Manhattan auf, ging in Berkeley aufs College und wurde eine amerikanische Künstlerin und Wissenschaftlerin. Seit 1955 lebt sie in Bloomington, Indiana, und fährt im Sommer mit ihrer Hündin Leah nach Cape Cod und zu den Steinriesen in Utah. Sie malt und schreibt autobiografische Texte. 70 Minuten, Englisch, deutsche Untertitel.
